Due to an unlucky running injury that had slowed me down, I had a rare and relaxing sleep in on a Saturday. After waking, I was in need of a coffee. So, I dropped into Queen of Leeds, located on Oxford Street in Leederville. The venue has a cool tagline – ‘coffee for the people.’ Having spoken to one of the lovely staff, I learned that the chef arrives at 5.30 each morning and that everything is made on site. This is great to see in this day of so much fast food and instant gratification. Inside is cosy without feeling cramped, which makes for a homely atmosphere. There’s plenty of seating too, including a bench inside that overlooks Oxford Street. This is a great spot for people watching. There are also a couple of big wooden tables in the middle of the venue. These are great for small groups, or anyone that wants space to sit and read or work on a laptop. You also have the option to sit outside, which is really nice on those glorious summer days Perth puts on. We have it so good here. Australia might be the lucky country, but I think Perth is the lucky city. Great coffee, world class beaches and lively hot spots like Leederville. What’s not to like? The venue has lots of character as well, with one wall having exposed brick, which adds so much charm. There are also feature cornices and a concrete floor. Throw in some funky hanging light fittings and you’ve really got something. Oh, and there’s raw sugar in glass jars on the tables, which is another nice touch. There’s also cool art on the walls, along with a few plants scattered throughout. Together, these make for a relaxed, yet lively and funky atmosphere. The music is really cool too – think chilled out tunes that blend seamlessly with the decor. You almost forget where you are, which is so nice. I was there around 10 am and between the hiss of the coffee machine, couples chatting and babies cooing, there was a real buzz about the place. It’s the sort of venue where anyone will feel comfortable. Today, I had a coffee – a large cappuccino to be precise – which was smooth and fresh and just what I needed. At $5.50, this represents good value. I can also say with confidence that their savoury muffins and smartie cookies - not just for kids! - are great. They also have newspapers, which I think is great, as I enjoy reading the paper while I have my coffee. There’s a menu hand-written on a chalkboard – old school cool and I love it. You can choose from things like poached eggs on toast and a granola bowl, or fruit toast. They also offer fresh juices and make milkshakes too. If the menu items don’t take your fancy, you can have something from the cabinet – think toasties, croissants and the like. Oh, and they have fresh muffins on top of the counter too. As an aside, the photos in this review are from a couple of different visits I made. One was around 10 am on a Saturday and the other was around 8 am on a Friday. Overall, Queen of Leeds is a great venue. Whether you want to grab a takeaway coffee on your way to work or just sit and have a leisurely coffee and chat with a friend, this is the place to do it. Once you’ve finished your coffee or meal, you can head on out and go for a stroll down Oxford Street. There’s plenty on offer. Book worms can check out the newly opened ‘Boundless Books’, while green thumbs looking for garden ornaments (or flowers) can visit ‘Funky Bunches.’ And if you’re into music, I recommend ‘Urban Records.’ They have record players and lots of other cool stuff as well. Or if you feel like a drink, head on over to ‘The Garden,’ which is a short walk away. It’s a great venue on a summer’s day. Or any day for that matter.
